5 Essential Home Care Rules for Baby's First Cold
When raising a child, there comes a moment when you truly realize what the "12-month illness" (dol-chire) means. For my child, as soon as they turned one, it was as if they had been waiting to start having a runny nose and a cough. At first, I thought it was just a simple cold, but when night came, the fever rose and the sound of my baby wheezing made my heart sink. For all the first-time parents who will inevitably face this daunting moment, I want to share the practical home care methods I learned through my own trial and error.

1. When a Fever Occurs, Look at the 'Baby’s Eyes' Rather Than the Thermometer
When a baby's temperature hits 38.5°C (101.3°F), your hands start to shake. At first, I thought I had to give fever reducers immediately. However, the pediatrician told me that the "baby's condition" is more important than the number on the thermometer.
Even if it's in the mid-38s, if the baby is playing well with toys and smiling while making eye contact, it's a sign that their body is fighting the virus well. In such cases, there's no need to rush to give fever reducers just to force the temperature down; a bit of patience is needed. Conversely, even if it's only 37.8°C, if the baby is limp, moaning, or only trying to sleep, you should give them medicine without hesitation to reduce their pain.

2. The Power of a Sip of Water: Hydration is a Necessity, Not an Option
When a cold strikes, the baby's body needs much more fluid than usual to lower the fever and thin out phlegm. However, babies with sore throats find it difficult even to swallow a sip of water.
The method I used was the "medicine bottle strategy." My baby, who refused water from a cup, would take it little by little if I put barley tea in the medicine bottle they were used to and squeezed it into their mouth. Don't try to feed them a lot at once. Just giving a sip or two every 5 to 10 minutes helps significantly in preventing dehydration. If the diaper has been dry for more than 6 hours, it's a danger sign, so hydration must be done relentlessly.

3. Room Temperature: 'Comfort' is Better Than 'Warmth'
Elders often say you should keep the room toasty to sweat out a cold. However, for a 12-month-old, this can be harmful. If the room is too hot, the baby's body temperature rises even more, and the air becomes dry, causing the nasal mucosa to dry up. Dry noses lead to crusting and worsen the cough.
In my experience, a room temperature of around 21–22°C (70–72°F) was most appropriate. It's a level where an adult might think, "Is it a bit chilly?" Instead, dress the baby in thin, long-sleeved innerwear to block direct cold air, and keep the humidity between 50% and 60% without fail. You will notice a clear difference in the baby's breathing in the morning just by running a humidifier through the night.
4. Don't Force a Tepid Water Massage
In the past, it was common advice to wipe the baby's body with lukewarm water whenever they had a fever. However, nowadays, it's said to be counterproductive if the baby hates it or feels chills. My baby used to scream whenever a wet towel touched them, and I later realized that it was immense stress and a drain on their stamina.
If the baby cries and refuses it, boldly give up on the lukewarm water massage. It's better to change them into thin clothes and provide more fluids. If the baby doesn't mind, just lightly wipe areas where large blood vessels pass, such as the armpits or groin.
5. The Real Golden Time to Go to the Hospital
While home care is important, there are times you must trust your parental instinct. In the following situations, you should consider the emergency room even at night or visit a pediatrician early the next morning:
📌When the fever doesn't drop at all for over 2 hours even after taking medicine.
📌When the baby's breathing sounds wheezing or the chest sinks in while breathing.
📌When the frequency of urination has significantly decreased compared to usual.
📌When the baby cannot make eye contact well and remains lethargic.
⭐ Summary
✅Check Condition: Focus on the baby's activity and appetite rather than just the thermometer numbers.
✅Hydration: Frequently feed lukewarm water using a medicine bottle or spoon.
✅Maintain Humidity: 50–60% humidity is the best medicine for a sick baby's respiratory system.
✅No Forced Massage: Be careful, as forced lukewarm massages can be harmful if the baby resists.
Watching your baby’s temperature fluctuate during their first cold is a burden heavier than any other task in the world. However, please remember that this time is also a precious process for your baby to build a strong immune system to navigate the world.
As parents, perhaps the best thing we can do—more than any great medical intervention—is to create a comfortable environment where the baby can rest peacefully and stay by their side with silent encouragement. I send my heartfelt support to all the parents reading this while watching over their children tonight. I sincerely hope that both you and your baby have a peaceful and restful night ♥
